Welcome to Pack 1965!

Pack 1965 Open House / Join Night: 27 August @ 4pm

With an array of captivating activities lined up, Pack 1965 is once again set to redefine the concept of fun for your sons and daughters in Kindergarten to 5th grade!

Pack 1965, a Gold-level “Journey To Excellence” unit in the Sam Houston Area Council, welcomes families from all walks of life to embark on an unforgettable journey. This exceptional group of young adventurers, guided by a team of dedicated adult leaders, is committed to nurturing the values of respect, responsibility, service, and resourcefulness. With every step they take, Cub Scouts develop leadership skills and become well-rounded individuals who are prepared to make a positive impact on the world around them.

So, what does a typical year in Pack 1965 look like? Below are some highlights from our calendar – strap in, because the adventure begins soon!

The year officially kicks off in September (after our “Open House” night in late August) with regular meetings, where our scouts, divided into “dens” (groups of scouts in the same grade/age), start learning the basics: handshake, salute, and the Scout Oath, Law, and Motto.

October starts with one of our fundraisers: the St Thomas Pumpkin Patch, and it’s an all-hands-on-deck event to unload and stage pumpkins. Scouts and their families “share the work” on weekends in October staffing the sales table; this is our major fundraiser of the year – we don’t ask our Scouts to sell anything door to door or in storefronts. Late in the month, we’ll be camping at Taylor Lake Village, and our campouts always include fun lessons, hikes, games, cooking over coals or a fire, and a GREAT campfire ceremony with S’mores!

In November and December we have our Raingutter Regatta races and holiday parties and we have plenty of service opportunities for our Scouts as well because we think service to others and the community is one of the most fundamental tenets of Scouting

The new year brings our “Big Three” events: a rocket launch, another campout, and our pinewood derby race! Not familiar with pinewood derby?  It’s a fast-paced, heart-pounding race where Cub Scouts and their families design and build their own sleek race cars, competing for the title of the fastest wheels in town. Creativity, craftsmanship, and friendly competition blend seamlessly, bringing families and the community together for a day of adrenaline-fueled fun.  (Side note: we opened a “parent/outlaw bracket” to the pinewood derby last year and it was a big hit!) We end the year in late April with our Blue & Gold Banquet and graduation ceremony – we don’t Scout in May because we know how busy May quickly becomes for families.

In the early summer, there are district and council sponsored day- and resident camps for Cub Scouts to attend.  Closer to home, at St. Thomas, Pack 1965 shows a monthly movie with free popcorn, lemonade, and A/C!

Speaking of busy: we’re all parents too and we know how weekday afternoons quickly fill up with extracurricular activities and practices, so we meet on Sunday afternoons at 4pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church in Nassau Bay. St. Thomas has embraced Scouting (our Cub Scout pack is there for elementary students and two Scouts BSA troops there for middle & high school boys and girls are there as well) and has a large and beautiful campus with facilities in and outdoors for our Scouts to use.  We “mirror” the CCISD calendar, so if there is a holiday on a Friday or Monday, we won’t meet – we want families to spend these times together, though we may at times occasionally offer “unofficial” hikes on holidays if there’s enough interest.

For those embarking on this incredible journey for the first time, the Cub Scout program provides a safe and engaging environment where young minds blossom. In this dynamic program, children learn essential life skills, develop character, and build self-confidence, all while having a blast.  Please contact us directly at join@pack1965.org with any questions you may have.

Moon Tree Planting in Nassau Bay

The City of Nassau Bay has invited our pack to participate in the planting of Moon Trees, grown from loblolly pine seeds carried into orbit around the moon by the Apollo 14 mission.

We’ll be there helping to plant these historic #MoonTrees. If you haven’t perused the email from our Pack Chair with the sign up link, please take a moment to check it out. There will be planting, free food, and rocket launching from 12:30pm-3:00pm. More information about the Moon Trees program can be found here, and more information about this event can be found here: https://www.nassaubay.com/711/Moon-Tree-Launch
